Text, Image, Obsession and Etcetera

In collaboration with Hanung Choi
2020

Arriving in Germany for the first time in 2019 as international students, this project was initiated from the confusion and anxiety experienced while navigating Hamburg as a new environment. Five urban elements—pedestrian lights, subway trains, escalators, supermarket trolleys, and bike lanes—were selected and subjected to photographic documentation within distinct frameworks over the course of a week. The chosen frameworks were defined by factors such as duration and time-lapse photo framing, based on the unique characteristics of each element

The primary objective was to minimize subjectivity in both the images and text. Consequently, the photographs were captured according to predetermined rules, devoid of any intentional aesthetic appeal.
The layout of the book is unique for each element. The accompanying texts were composed either solely of what was observable in the photos (with or without zoom) or conveyed conversations with individuals present in the photos. Some interesting conversations are to be read by rotating the book 180 degrees.
