As an iconic part of Los Angeles’ landscape, palm trees hold significant cultural and aesthetic value, symbolizing the city’s historical development, Mediterranean climate, and glamorous image popularized by Hollywood. Many of the palms planted during the early 20th century have now reached the end of their natural lifespans. This, combined with pests, diseases, and environmental stressors, has led to a noticeable decline in their numbers. Debates are ongoing about whether to replace these palms to preserve their historic and aesthetic appeal or to plant other tree species better suited to Los Angeles’ changing climate and water availability. These alternatives could provide shade, improve air quality, and support urban wildlife. This project investigated the influence of media, especially Hollywood, on the image of LA through artistic research and proposed a conceptual model as a memorial for the dying palm trees on Sunset Boulevard.
